About

With more than 30 years of experience, Sterling’s professional sculpting projects began with a series of figurines for Hallmark—the first of which sold more than $1-million dollars in the first week of its release.

More recently, Sterling unveiled a 7-foot statue of civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph. In 2023, he created a 21-foot monument to African Americans buried in unmarked graves in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Other major work includes a painting of Naval hero Carl Brashear, which served as the centerpiece during the christening of the U.S.S Carl Brashear, where military dignitaries and Robert DeNiro, the star of the Brashear biopic “Men of Honor,” celebrated the work. Sterling was also commissioned to create a life-size bust honoring Brashear, the first African American Master diver.

Other sculptures of note include the 5 foot 11-inch statue of the black Virgin Mary with baby Jesus for the Archdiocese of Newark. The amazing statue is one of a few African American created Blessed Mother statues in the world.

One of the nation’s most prolific poster artists, Sterling’s work remains in top demand on the African American art circuit. His creations, like the wildly popular “Spiritual Nap” and “Looking Good Cooking” series, result in instant recognition. Seasoned art collectors make his originals must-have additions to their fine-art collections.

Creatively diverse, Sterling has worn a multitude of hats from working on the impressive Macy’s Studio team, which designs and creates the floats, and balloons for the world famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to making toys for notable toymaker McFarlane Toys and figurines for cards-and-gifts company Hallmark. As well, Sterling has drawn Harlequin American Romance Covers, characters for Marvel Comics, and is even creating an animated series based on characters from children’s books he’s illustrated.
